Will exercise increase the risk of capsular contracture?

Question

I had my surgery two weeks ago and have had a smooth recovery so far. I was cleared to do leg exercises. I went to the gym yesterday and worry that I may have done more than I should have and increased my heart rate too much for my first time back. I didn't feel any pain and still don't but I'm worried that this would increase my risk. I'm going to take it easier next time at the gym but I just wanted to know if this one time back at the gym could significantly increase my risk of complications.

I'm not aware of any study showing exercise to be a risk of capsule contracture. At 2 weeks, I think it's too early to exercise and get your heart rate above 100 beats per minute. This might increase the risks postoperative bleeding.Best wishes, Dr. ALDO

There is no evidence that exercise increases the incidence of capsular contraction, however, one must be careful to not do heavy chest muscle exercises at lease 4 weeks after breast augmentation.

but if strenuous, could contribute to bleeding which would really be a bummer.  Toning exercises should be tolerated without problems but its always best to check with YOUR surgeon as to what and what isn't allowed.

The first two weeks are when post-operative exercising is curtailed the most.  This is to avoid complications such as bleeding or excessive stress on the incisions.  If your surgeon has cleared you for the leg exercises after two weeks, you should feel comfortable in doing the exercises.  You will not increase your risk of capsular contracture with  your leg exercises.

The first two weeks after surgery seem to be the window for stirring up bleeding by sudden or vigorous activity so you should be in the clear. Just listen to your body and ease back into full activity. Most surgeons prefer avoiding heavy use of the pecs for 4-6 weeks. Hope this helps, good luck!
