Did I damage skin by using hydrogen peroxide for too long after upper bleph? 2.5 weeks post-op.

Question

I had an upper Bleph 2.5 weeks ago. I used hydrogen peroxide on a q-tip to clean wounds for 17 days (2x day). I now realize that I didn’t need to do that. Did I do permanent damage or delay wound healing by doing this? Thanks!

The peroxide will not damage the skin.  We frequently use it to help dissolve any old blood or scars after the surgery.  You probably did not need to use for 2 weeks, but didn't do any harm

It's best to follow the doctor's instructions on what to apply to the incisions.  Some one of the above, or none of the above, are appropriate, and can in fact cause harm (usually temporary).Hopefully you will heal well and no damage has been done!

Thank you for your question. I wouldn't say that the hydrogen peroxide has permanently damaged your skin. I typically prescribe Tobradex which is an antibiotic ointment that I have my patients apply to incision line for 2 weeks post op. Keeps the area clean and moist until sutures are removed. It depends. If your incisions are completely closed, you used a diluted hydrogen peroxide, and there is no skin irritation, it's likely that everything will be perfectly fine. However, if you were putting peroxide on an open incision, this can definitely slow down wound healing. I would recommend discussing this with your surgeon!Hope this helps!dr. silver
