I was diagnosed with lupus 2 yrs ago & It doesn't affect any organs. I'm currently taking plaquenil, Azathioprine, Benlysta, & prednisone (7.5mg & tapering until I get to zero) My WBC is 2.5 & flunctuates. I naturally lost 120lbs but since being diagnosed I have gained back 40 due to the steroids. I plan on losing the 40 and getting a bbl and mommy makeover. Is this possible? Would I have to adjust medications to be able to? What blood results would disqualify me?
Answer: Mommy makeover Dear Wantsinfo101, you should be healthy and your conditions should be under control prior to surgery. You will also need a clearance from your doctor. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations Daniel Barrett, MD Certified, American Board of Plastic Surgery Member, American Society of Plastic Surgery Member, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

Answer: Cosmetic surgery for someone with lupus? Hello, thank you for your question. You would need medical clearance from both your PCP and Rheumatologist prior to undergoing elective surgery to determine the most safe approach for you.

Answer: Lupus with major cosmetic procedure It sounds like your lupus is being treated pretty aggressively. You should first speak to your rheumatologist. This is the most important person‘s view in regards to the appropriateness of doing cosmetic surgery. You may be a much better candidate once you’re off prednisone for example. Lupus and the medication is used to treat this condition can have serious consequences for elective surgical procedures and it would behoove you to minimize risks and have a serious think through regarding if this makes sense for you. Mommy makeover combined with BBL(tummy tuck, breast lift, full body liposuction and fat transfer) is a lot of surgery. It’s more surgery than I would do in a single session and I would be very apprehensive on someone with underlying autoimmune disease. it would also make sense to see if you’re a good candidate for these procedures in the first place. Simply not qualifying for cosmetic surgery because you have lupus doesn’t mean you can’t get an assessment in regards to being a candidate for cosmetic surgery. It makes little sense to take excessive risks for someone who is not a great candidate for great improvements but it may justify taking moderate risk if someone is going to have a life transforming outcome. Start by talking to your rheumatologist, primary care physician and have in person consultations with local board-certified plastic surgeon‘s. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
