The major disadvantages of cheek implants based on 43 years of doing these and following these patients are the implant may have an infection Ironically, I have never had this in both cheeks and this is uncommon. I have not had this for the last 10-15 years. There can be slight bone absorption though this occurs in patients that have too large an implant in my opinion. This is still in my opinion the gold standard of.cheek augmentation.
There is always a risk (infection, unhappy with results, etc.). with these types of procedures, however in the right hands it is safe. Symmetry and volume of the cheeks can be created with well-placed fillers (Voluma, Radiesse, Bellafill) and Sculptra. This will allow you to try on the look before using implants or fat. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a facial sculpting expert. Best, Dr. Emer
Wish any procedure there are risks. In expert hands the risks can be reduced. Overall, some of the better known risks with cheek implants are asymmetry, bleeding, infection, need to remove the implant, cheek numbness, and bone resorption. With regards to asymmetry, the cheeks in everyone are a bit asymmetrical to begin with. It is impossible to get rid of all of this with implants but natural asymmetry can be improved. A trial of filler before the implant is a good way to assess if the implant is for you if you are not certain. Seek out a consultation with a surgeon who is expert in Facial implants. Best wishes.
