CO2 Laser & Rhinoplasty: Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (Oral Herpes)- Should I take an anti viral drug as a precaution before surgery?

Next week I am undergoing rhinoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, a u-lift, and CO2 laser on my face, neck and chest. I've gotten cold sores since I was a little girl. I am wondering if the stress from these procedures - particularly the CO2 laser - might warrant taking an anti viral drug before surgery to prevent an outbreak. The last thing I will want is a herpes outbreak. I've rarely taken oral medications for my cold sores so I really don't know if oral medication is appropriate. Thank you.

Lasering around the mouth could re-activate the herpes eruption. And if it found its way onto the lasered areas, serious infection and scarring could result. So yes, it is prudent to take antiviral medication, starting at least one day before and then after your procedure.

CO2 laser treatment can definitely activate on outbreak of herpes and an antiviral should be taken beforehand prophylactically.  You should discuss this with your surgeon, as many surgeons would normally routinely give this medication for that procedure.

We prescribe anti-viral medication for all patients who have a history of herpes prior to any surgery. This should be part of your pre-operative medications.

Anyone with a history of herpes should definitely have Prophylactic treatment with an antiviral. Begin two days before the procedure and continue for three weeks.

Yes, it is important to be on a herpes simplex anti-viral drug starting before the surgical procedure. This will help prevent  herpes breakout during the postoperative recovery period.
