Bilateral parotid gland enlargement / swollen due to bulimic tendency.

Question

I'm completely out of Bulimia however the swollen cheeks are causing me continuous stress and discomfort. Is there any medicine to reduce the enlargement? Please help me.

Thank you for the question. I am happy to hear that you have recovered. The best option for parotid swelling, once other medical issues have been ruled out, is probably Botox injections. This should be done with small doses, sequentially over a few months. Best of luck moving forward!

The parotid/cheeks can be treated with liposuction and/or botox.  I suggest seeing a cosmetic dermatologist or plastic surgeon with experience.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Parotid swelling is common with bulimia.  While there is no medicine to reduce this, there are some options to help slim this area.  This must be done carefully as the facial nerve (nerve which controls the facial movements) runs through the parotid glands.  Injury to the nerve can cause facial paralysis, so please make sure you seek a board certified specialist in the face who is knowledgeable about the anatomy in this area.  3-dimensional computer imaging can help you visualize what you may look like afterwards and serve as an important communication tool with your surgeon.

Hi Giorgio, I would recommend you to see ENT/Head and neck doctor to make sure there is no infection and biopsy is not required. You can try Botox injections but it has to be done by experienced board certified doctor. As far as a surgical procedure you can do Parotidectomy, it should be covered by insurance. Good luck!
