Can Kenalog shot be used to dissolve scar tissue from lip fillers? (photo)

Question

I’ve had bad lip injections years ago and did dissolve the filler but was left with very bumpy upper lip and uneven lump where my Cupid bow is. Can a Kenalog shot flatten the bump and soften up the tissue?

Thank you for your photo and question. There are a few things that need to be noted before this is recommended. What type of filler was used when your lips were injected, and how soon after receiving the filler did it get dissolved?  If it is scar tissue then Kenelog would be worth trying, however, I suggest you visit an experienced injector who specializes in corrections. yes , a kenalog/5FU injecion series would do the trick but may need to be done a few times lightly for best results and is quick to get done.

Thank you for sharing your question and photographs and I am sorry to hear of your lip filler difficulties.  I would seek out a filler specialist to assess your lips.  If this is scar tissue kenalog may prove useful to help with the healing process while if it feels like continued filler, I would inject more dissolving agent to restore your previous lip appearance.

Thank you for your question.  It is unfortunate that you have had these issues with your lip filler treatment.  If the filler was done years ago and has since been dissolved, scar tissue may be the issue.  It’s difficult to tell from pictures alone.  Steroid injections like Kenelog can soften scars but may not be the perfect solution. I recommend a physical exam with a reputable surgeon to assess the situation and determine if steroid injections are the best solution for you.

If this is infact scarring then Kenalog injections may help. However, first any remaining filler should be removed. If an HA filler was used, it could be dissolved using hyaluronidase.

Thank you for your photo. The first step would be to remove any remaining filler with a hyaluronidase injection in the upper lip so that you can determine exactly what area is scar tissue vs remaining filler. After that, Kenalog/5 FU injections can be done into the remaining scar tissue to flatten out the appearance. You may require multiple small injections overtime to make sure there is no distortion of your lip shape. Hope this helps!

Thanks for writing,To truly give you the best answer you need an in person physical examination. If there is true scar, then very conservative injection may help. Kenalog is a steroid which stimulates collagenase (an enzyme which break down collagen), it can also dissolve fat and depigment the skin. As a result it is not the perfect solution, and if injected poorly the results can be awful.  If you do this you absolutely need an expert, no spas or certified injectors, to help you make the correct decision. I would hesitate to provide you a response whether or not kenalog is appropriate to be used in your case. I think you need to be seen by plastic surgeon who can evalueate your photographs prior to having fillers in the lips and then look at you in person. Scar tissue rarely forms p when hyaluronic acid is used in the lips, for those reasons you need an in-person consultation. If there is scar tissue in your lips, than yes, kenalog can be used but with extreme caution. I hope this helps and good luck from the York City
