I am getting a rhinoplasty/septoplasty/turbinectomy in exactly 4 weeks, on June 25th. I take Allegra D 12 hour every morning to control my horrendous seasonal allergies. Will the pseudoephedrine interefere with the anesthesia? Do I need to stop taking this prior to surgery and how long before? Would it be okay to take Allegra, without the pseudoephedrine, up until the day of surgery? I'm also afraid that if I do not take it, I will be sneeezing and hurting myself the day of surgery.
Answer: Allegra better than Allegra D In my experience it is okay to take Allegra D prior to a septo/rhinoplasty. However, the pseudoephederin can compromise the blood flow to the septum, which could delay healing. I usually recommend that patients take Allegra for 4-6 weeks before surgery and not use the Allegra D until after the septo/rhino has healed.Good luck with your procedure!

Answer: Taking allergy medications prior to rhinoplasty surgery Allegra D contains fexofenidine (an antihistamine) and pseudoephedrine. Pseudoephedrine can cause increased blood pressure and heart rate - this can increase bleeding during surgery and should be avoided. With regard to seasonal allergies, taking an antihistamine alone (not combined with pseudoephedrine) can provide significant relief. I will typically have my patients continue taking their antihistamine to decrease congestion and irritation of the nasal airway before and after surgery. There are many over the counter medications for allergies that contain an antihistamine alone. Allegra (without pseudoephedrine) is an option. You should contact your surgeon and discuss this specifically to see if you can take an antihistamine or if your surgeon wants you to stop all together.

Answer: Medications before rhinoplasty This is an important question. Each rhinoplasty surgeon and anesthesiologist team have their own opinions on this. Ask your team if this will interfere with the common regimens that they use. Good luck

Answer: Allergies and rhinoplasty In this particular situation I would suggest contacting your surgeon to ask the same question. In my practice, I prefer to have my patients off of the decongestants about a week prior to surgery primarily due to potential for issues related to blood pressure. I do not feel that continuing antihistamines for your seasonal allergic issues is going to adversely effect your surgery or the healing process. Good luck with your surgery!
