Ear Deformity Surgery - could this be fixed? Will insurance cover it? (Photo)

Very common my daughter has them too. I have been asked to remove them but I don’t. And I have a lot of experience with ear surgery. Trying to get the contour looking natural and seamless will be tough. You’re better off leaving them

A Darwin tubercle excision and otoplasty can be done together. I think it is a long shot, but very easy to check to see if your insurance approves it by submitting. There is no harm. Good Afternoon! In my experience, otoplasty or ear surgery is entirely cosmetic and is not covered by insurance. The ears can definitely be improved. The projection or how far they stick out involves "pinning" the ears back toward the skull. The Darwin's Tubercle can be trimmed to allow better contour to the helix. This procedure can be done in clinic and has a relatively straight-forward recovery. Seek consultation with a facial plastic surgeon who has experience with otoplasty. Best of luck!

Thank you for your question. Both the tubercle (sometimes called Darwin's tubercle/Woolner's tubercle) can be corrected in the process of also correcting your protruding ears. All health insurance plans are different and different rules exist in different parts of the country. I would recommend you see a board certified plastic surgeon experienced in congenital ear deformities to discuss options and the possibility for insurance coverage.

Yes, it's a Darwin´s tubercle. Its removal with us costs 500 euros per ear. The removal leaves no visible scars. Health insurance does not cover the costs.
