How Long Will It Take for Dryness to Go Away in my Nose After Rhinoplasty?

Question

Hello, I am currently 7 days post-op rhinoplasty and I have I horrible dry sensation inside my nostrils, more so in the front. At first, I thought dry blood and scabs were causing this but after I cleaned my nose with a saline spray and removed all of the blood, it still felt dry and stiff! I am currently still wearing the drip pad because the dry air really irritates it even more. So, I was just wondering how long I can expect to have this crusty/dry feeling? Thank you so much!

You may experience dryness or irritation of the nose for many weeks after rhinoplasty. Generally the symptoms are easily treated with lubricating nasal spray often combined with a steroid spray.

It takes about six weeks for dryness to resolve. During this time use a lot of saline spray, clean the inside of your nostrils with peroxide and apply Ayr Gel, it is available over the counter. Extreme care in hand hygiene is important. Wash your hands constantly and do not touch your nose with your finger only cotton applicator or paper napkin (Kleenex) Regards

Hello Rose,

	Thank you for the question.  The sensation of dryness inside the nose is not uncommon after a rhinoplasty.  Each person and each rhinoplasty procedure recovers at his or her own pace and you will notice improvement over the next few weeks.  A humidifier may help as would vaseline ointment/aquaphore.  A surgical mask will also help as it tends to trap poisture in there.

Dear Rose,

	Thank you for your question. It takes many weeks for the nose to feel normal.  The inside lining has to heal fully.  In the meantime, keeping the area moist with antibiotic ointment, aquaphore, or other ointment may be of benefit.
