Can I take ZMA tablets in the run up to rhinoplasty & during healing ?

For the last 6 months I've taken daily ZMA tablets consisting of 450mg Magnesium Aspartate, 30mg Zinc Monomethionine, and 12mg of Vitamin B6. I used to suffer from disrupted sleep but since taking these I sleep better and for longer than I have done in years. I'm scheduled to have rhinoplasty in December 2015 and was wondering, would there be any ill effects to me continuing with the supplement up until the op (and possibly during healing?) thanks in advance, Ed

Thank you for your question.  The ZMA tablets themselves pose no significant risk around the time of your surgery.  The vitamin B6 in the tablets can increase the risk of bleeding when taken in conjunction with blood thinners (not by itself).  As long as you avoid blood thinning medications and herbals, you should be fine.  Having said that, make sure to check with your surgeon to ensure his preferences are not different.

In our practice, we ask patients to stop all herbal medications and dietary supplements 2 weeks before the surgery,  because some of them interfere with bleeding times and anesthesia. Best to check with your operative surgeon
