Is a no-shave hair transplant possible?

I'm looking to have a FUT done without shaving for mostly social considerations(job, being presentable for be seen in public, limiting down time etc). Is it true that its best to shave recipient area to access the density of hair and their angles? Can you get equivalent accuracy without shaving?

It is perfectly possible to do an unshaven FUT (FUSS, strip surgery). In fact, it is even possible to use a technique called 'long hair transplant'. This is the same procedure done while preparing the grafts with long hairs on them, so the procedure is not only unshaven, but also the grafts add new hairs to the recipient area which will give more coverage during the healing period. These hairs will of course shed in the next few weeks, but there is an additional advantage of providing coverage during the healing phase and also visualising a preview of the final result. This technique requires a very experienced surgical team and can be performed by very few surgeons in the world.

FUE has evolved significantly since I began doing it in 2002. I started using a manual punch, this evolved to a power punch. We started with small sessions of 500 to 1000 grafts, now regularly do 3000 plus grafts.Over the last year or two, more and more patients have been requesting no shave FUE. Although it is much more time consuming than a normal shave FUE, it does offer the advantage of a fast recovery for the patient. We have been offering up to 2000 grafts using the no shave method for a couple years with great success. we can do  a non shave FUE op with harvesting around 2000 grafts .That number would be enough to cover a frontal receding line or a small bald area in scalp .So It is better to see your photos  in order to understand the problem you have, treatment methods and/or estimate how much graft do we need to cover area

Absolutely, I very, very rarely shave the recipient area with donor harvesting with donor strip technique. But I know that some colleagues do it and it is one of the surgeon's preference.

As we do FUT, we almost never shave the recipient area and place the grafts between the existing hairs

A FUE procedure can be done with maximum 2000-2200 grafts without shaving either donor or recipient area. If you require more grafts than this then shaving or trimming the donor site to number zero trim becomes imperative. Please consider visiting a few hair transplant surgeons to get a better opinion.
