Immediately after surgery I thought my neck looked too tight. Since then I have continuously experienced the 'noose effect' and also a feeling of strong pulling down each side of the neck. It is also mottled and discoloured and there is a horizontal ridge from each side separating the 'normal' lower neck from the numb upper neck and chin area. My PS says it will resolve but I do need a time frame which he won't give me. Also any tips on things I can do to help myself would be much appreciated.

Varying degrees of numbness will be present after surgery and will improve gradually as the nerves reconnect to the skin. This process can take from 2-6 months for face, neck and cheeks, and to 9-12 months for the forehead and scalp. Muscle weakness may also be present around the mouth especially if liposuction is used. This typically recovers fully in the months after surgery.

Answer: Tight Neck A sensation of tightness in the neck is somewhat common after a neck lift. Trust your PS. This tight feeling will go away. However, some PS place a suture from the mastoid area across the neck to the opposite mastoid. If you doctor did this with permanent suture, it may need to be adjusted.

Answer: I get this question a lot Hello. Congratulations on your surgery! The tightness, just like bruising and swelling, will resolve in time. I have never had a case where it did not come around to normal with time (knock on wood). Your surgeon has probably told you the same. Attend all of your post op appointments and bring your observations to the attention of your surgeon. He/she will be able to determine if all is going according to schedule. If still concerned or if it worsens, see a board certified plastic surgeon.
