Chances of reoccurrence for a lipoma removal from the buttocks?

Question

I had falling down the stairs years ago and developed an indentation on my butt. I then developed a lump on my right butt (7-8cm) I have had it examined via an ultrasound and I was told it was just a lipoma. I want to get rid of it but I have been told chances are it will come back again and that would be a waste of money. I was also told the location of the lipoma is tricky so it could cause complications Is there any thing I can do please?

Lipomas are benign fatty tumors that occur under the skin and less commonly within the muscle. They are associated with mild discomfort and a lump underneath the skin. It is always best to talk to an expert plastic surgeon to determine whether the lipoma is possibly a cyst or a tumor or hernia. We would have to remove the lipoma to be sure that it is not something else and we usually do this by sending it to a pathologist for evaluation. If a lipoma is painful, then an exam is needed to make sure it is not compressing on a nerve or whether the diagnosis is different. Aftercare for a lipoma includes gentle compression and Plato’s Scar Serum twice daily on the wound.

Many thanks for your question. In general it is very straightforward to remove lipomas and often under local anaesthetic (awake). The risk of recurrence and other complications is very low. Be reassured that there is a solution to your problem and I would advise seeing a fully accredited plastic surgeon for an assessment.

Thank you for sharing your question.  Assuming the location of the lipoma is not within a part of the gluteal muscle, removal should be straightforward and offer a very small chance of recurrence.  Be sure to see an ASPS board certified plastic surgeon in consultation to discuss.
