Can I re-pierce my ears after successful keloid removal?

Question

pierced my ears (using a gun) in 2008. Developed peasized keloids behind my earlobes 1yr later & had them surgically removed in 2010. (also had kenalog IV into my ear cartilage once a week for 4weeks after surgery.) keloids havent returned & I want to pierce my ears again. GP says its ok & that the keloids were because I used a gun.Is this advisable? What are the chances of regrowth & how best can I go about this? I've had a belly ring since 2005 with no problem- done with a needle,not a gun.

I say avoid doing this as you can never predict if a new keloid will form.  You take the risk each time.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Certain people are prone to keloids and others never develop keloids. I would not however ever re pierce in the same area but a quarter of a inch away. The use of a strong topical steroid or topical silicone gel daily could decrease the chance of new keloid formation.
