Could this be a lipoma on my chin? (Photo)

Question

I had a consultation with a maxillo surgeon who did a 3D scan of my skull. My jaw is symmetrical. He told me the problem was soft tissue. However he didn't give much information about the cause of the bump on my chin. Could this be a lipoma?

It is always hard to tell definitively based on photos, but I believe he was referring to the combination of skin, muscle, fat of the chin instead of something like a lipoma. Normally a lipoma is soft and mildly mobile. I have not seen many involving this region of the face. A CT scan or ultrasound would be able to definitively rule out a lipoma or other soft tissue growth.

Lipomas are benign fatty tumors that occur under the skin and less commonly within the muscle. They are associated with mild discomfort and a lump underneath the skin. It is always best to talk to an expert plastic surgeon to determine whether the lipoma is possibly a cyst or a tumor or hernia. We would have to remove the lipoma to be sure that it is not something else and we usually do this by sending it to a pathologist for evaluation. If a lipoma is painful, then an exam is needed to make sure it is not compressing on a nerve or whether the diagnosis is different. Aftercare for a lipoma includes gentle compression and Plato’s Scar Serum twice daily on the wound.

A lipoma would have showed up on your scan so that is not the cause.  I'd suggest soft tissue filler to correct your asymmetry.

A lipoma is one possibility for a soft tissue bump on your chin. Lipomas are benign fatty tumors that can occur anywhere there is fat tissue. Other possibilities could include a sebaceous cyst, a dermoid cyst, or even a localized area of swelling or inflammation.
However, without being able to physically examine the bump or view any imaging, it's impossible for me to provide a definitive answer. If your maxillofacial surgeon was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation, it may be beneficial to seek a second opinion. A dermatologist or another maxillofacial surgeon may be able to provide further insight into the cause of the bump on your chin. It's important to get a proper diagnosis to determine the best course of treatment.
