Iliac crest implants, while still rarely done, are not dangerous. Placed thorough a small posterior hip skin incision in the prone position they are placed along the curved iliac crest. The key question is not the surgical technique but what material should they be made of and how are they to be designed.
that is a bit like saying is it dangerous to drive to work. It's not a common procedure and I would venture to say most plastic surgeons have never done iliac crest implants. You may find plastic surgeons or doctors from different specialties doing cosmetic surgery who have more of a specialization and body implants. The most important aspect is to have sufficient soft tissue padding in order for the implants to feel natural. The second two most important factors are getting the correct shape of implant and having it placed correctly. All implants are extremely sensitive to any type of bacterial contamination during the procedure. Should an infection happen than the implant 100% has to be removed. For example, gluteal implants have a fairly high complication and failure rate. Iliac crest are probably much easier. I don't think you're going to find a plastic surgeon on this form who has extensive experience to answer your question. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
