I am 5 weeks post op breast augmentation I had smooth round silicone implants over the muscle. I noted my i Scion opening up and some watery blood and a small amount of yellow fluid on one side. I am in no pain I have no fever and my breasts aren’t hot so I’m thinking I’m just spitting a stitch but wanted to get an expert opinion if I should be worried or not
Answer: Spitting sutures Dear ehuffman143,based on your photos, it does look like you have problems with spitting sutures. This type of wounds heal pretty well and you should have no major problems with it. It would be the best to visit your plastic surgeon and check whether he/she needs to remove the sutures. Until then keep your wounds clean and covered. Daniel Barrett, MD, MHA, MS Certified, American Board of Plastic Surgery Member, Am. Society of Plastic Surgery

Answer: In person follow up Thanks for reaching out and sharing photos. As other surgeons have mentioned, as it would be easy to say YES it seems you are just spitting a suture, you should absolutely be seen by your surgeon just to be safe. Congrats on your procedure and best of luck! Dr. Kachenmeister

Answer: Am I spitting stitches after #breastaugmentation? While it is very likely you are simply extruding some sutures (spitting stitches), the fact that your implants are subglandular means there is only your native breast tissue/fat between the open area of your incision and your implant. I am never able to fully reassure a patient that there is no infection when there is delayed healing over an implant until the incision is FULLY healed. You could technically have an exposed implant if there is a conduit between the open wound and the pocket of the implant and sometimes this presents only with fluid discharge, as an infection of the implant/pocket could be "trying to work its way out" instead of producing pus and inflammation inside a closed incision. Of course, that is the worst case scenario, and it is very possible this is just simple delayed healing of your incision. In my opinion, based on the history, you should absolutely be seen by your surgeon as soon as available to check your incisions and provide reassurance or to intervene if necessary. You may be placed on antibiotics as a precaution, and additional wound care may be recommended.

Answer: Suture extrusion Congraulations on your recent procedure. At 5 weeks post op, I agree that you are probably “just spitting a stitch.” Suture extrusions usually resolve in a couple of days. If the irritation persists, then contact your plastic surgeon. Best to you on your continued recovery.

Answer: Incision after Breast Augmenation Most likely some incisional separation and maybe some spitting sutures. It should eventually heal but make sure you follow up with your Plastic Surgeon. I usually advise some antibacterial ointment and covering over the wound. You should see a noticeable improvement in 3 weeks. But again, follow up with your Plastic Surgeon
