Question

I had a hair transplant about a year and half ago. My hair is still growing in miniature (due to androgenic alpopecia) and will require me to get prp on my scalp. I just got a chemical perm in my hair. Will PRP still work for me with a perm in me hair? Or should I just get another hair transplant?

Cocoknowsbest,The use of perms and relaxers in African Americans on a frequent basis is common amongst African-Americans. Studies have proven that such lifestyle styling practices is a strong factor in the development of scarring alopecias in these individuals. In particular there is a strong correlation with CCCA. PRP treatment can be of great help in patients with AGA and CCCA. So, this should be of help to you to not only reverse the miniaturization that you are seeing, but also to possibly prevent CCCA from developing in the future. Would recommend that you be evaluated by a hair loss specialist for a definitive diagnosis and subsequent optimal treatment plan.

Prp is effective, but it can take up to 6 months to see results. I have a very specific protocol, every 3-4 weeks for 6 months with prp therapy.  I also add in progesterone to speed the healing process.  After that the injections are tailored down.  You should also be on viviscal and other growth promoting ingredients.  Best, Dr. Emer

In my opinion, PRP will be unaffected by chemical perms. However, it has been reported that continuous chemical perming of hair in African-Americans can lead to hair loss and scarring Alopecia.PRPHAIRMD.COM

Perms and relaxers are not the best thing for your scalp but it should not effect your PRP results. Look into other methods of straightening your hair to improve your hair restoration results.

High density PRP will likely promote hair regeneration. Certainly worth a try before you go to a transplant. Worst case, you'll likely need to transplant less hair.
The chemicals from the perms will likely not impact PRP treatments much, but whether you're getting a transplant or PRP treatments, the chemicals in perms are not the most healthiest when it comes to skin (scalp) and hair growth.

PRP is a restorative regenerative treatment that improves the tissue it is injected into. In the hair restoration field, it shows great improvement in healing post procedure and can also be used annually (depending on the method used) to reverse the aging process of follicles.

PRP will definitely help you. The issue is using chemical perms, irrespective of what kind of treatment you had or will have, chemical perms can affect the growth of hair. You may want to review with your Dr the chemicals you are putting into your hair.

Perms and relaxers should have to effect on the hair that has already grown. It will not alter the effectiveness of the PRP. PRP is good for preventative measures while hair transplants are used for areas where there is no growth or areas that need more density.
