Could vigorous rubbing 11 days post op have caused extensive graft damage?

Hello, I had a 3k graft FUT. When I went in 11 days post op, the nurse noticed I had scabbing on my recipient area. She offered to wash my head, which I accepted. To my astonishment, she began to rub rigorously (w/ more pressure than anyone would normally use in a shower). When I got home I noticed slight bleeding, though it was only in 3 very small spots. She assured me grafts were secure by day 9. Could the cavalier attitude of this nurse have caused extensive graft damage?

Although it must have been scary, I doubt the rigorous washing 11 days postop wold have done any damage to the grafts. Typically the grafts are secure by day 4 and although I wouldn't advice being too aggressive, by 11 days postop the grafts are probably pretty safe. Hopefully it will turn out ok. Good luck!

Generally, the grafts are considered secure four days after the procedure. Hair transplant nurses specialize in postoperative care and know exactly how to wash a newly transplanted scalp. This does not mean, however, that vigorous rubbing after 11 or more days cannot cause damage to the grafts.If you still feel uncertain, consult your doctor.

It is unlikely that the vigorous rubbing could have caused extensive damage. However, you should always follow your doctor's advice and not do things that are not recommended by your doctor. The nurse could have easily caused bleeding or dislodged grafts. You need to be patient and wait for the next few weeks to see how you are doing.

You need to contact your doctor immediately if you start noticing more bleeding or swelling. Otherwise, continue with the medication as prescribed, keep the area clean and dry, avoid strenuous physical activity and return for a follow up visit in two weeks.
