Can you have surgery after blood clots?

Question

I had a c section with my last baby. With the c section, I developed blood clots. Will I b able to get BBL and tummy tuck? The clots were brought on by the c section. I am not predisposed to blood clots.?

Your PS should know all of your risk factors for blood clots, be able to stratify your risk, and manage you accordingly.   If you have more than one risk factor for blood clots other than having a BBL and lipo surgery, you may need Lovenox or something similar.   If you are a patient who is high risk for blood clots, you may want to consider if you want to do the surgery. The main risk is related to development of a blood clot in the legs that can then migrate to the lungs. Sitting for long periods of time puts you at higher risk due to being stationary.

Thank you for your question. Elective surgery can certainly be reconsidered after completion of anti coagulation treatments. Obtaining medical clearance would be appropriate. I would recommend scheduling an in-person consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your goals and options. Best of luck!

I would recommend discussing this with your primary care physician first. He or she may want to refer you to a hematologist for a bleeding/blood clot disorder.  Most likely this would not prevent you from having elective cosmetic surgery but you may be at a slightly higher risk for developing blood clots in the future.
