How much can skin really stretch during a tummy tuck?

During a tummy tuck, the skin above the level of the umbilicus is stretched out to the level slightly above the pubic bone. This can be several inches. If there is not enough skin to reach that far then the incision will end up riding slightly higher and may be half between the umbilicus and pubic bone. Later, a revision can be done in an attempt to lower the scar.

For a standard tummy tuck the skin between the belly button down to the level of the pubic bone is removed. If there is inadequate tissue to stretch that far either the level of the incision can be raised or you can consider a mini tummy tuck. Most patients have more excess skin than they realize. I encourage you to meet with a board certified plastic surgeon near you for a consultation. During this meeting your surgeon can demonstrate what you can expect in terms of skin removal.

Thank you for your question! A tummy tuck typically includes liposuction to the upper and lower abdomen, pubic area, lower back, and flanks. Once those fat cells are removed and your muscles have been sutured back together, you are left with excess skin. All of the pretty skin located above your belly button will then get pulled down, and your excess skin is removed. The incision is from hip bone to hip bone and can easily be covered by a pair of underwear or bikini bottoms.
