Im scheduled for a FUT procedure in Oct, but lately I’m regretting my decision. I’ve had a bald spot for at least 15 years; it’s slow growing. Looking at my dad & grandfather, I can see where I’m heading in my 60’s and on. If I get my crown covered with a 5000 graft procedure, should I be concerned about gaps appearing on the back & sides as my hair recedes? And looking weird when the front goes? I’m 80% sure I want to cancel, but before I make the call, I want to see if anyone here has advice.
Answer: Future Hair Loss Concern Very understandable concern. While the transplanted follicles will be genetically resistant to balding, future hair loss and hair thinning in other areas is always possible. Further hair loss, however, may not appear for another ten or fifteen years, depending on your hair’s stability. Many hair transplant patients find that personalized medical and topical hair loss programs such as topical minoxidil, groMD products, PRP Treatments, and oral finasteride effectively prevent and minimize future loss. Also, in reference to 5,000 grafts...that seems a bit much. If a practice is quoting you a number like that I would recommend doing some more research and finding other surgeons as a 2nd and 3rd opinion. Id recommend looking up the IAHRS to find a qualified hair restoration surgeon.A formal evaluation with a hair transplant specialist will equip you with the knowledge and confidence to make an accurate decision regarding the stability or progression of your hair loss.

Answer: Crown hair transplant A few comments. First of all, I never perform 5000 grafts in a single procedure, typically if in fact 5000 grafts will be delegated to that area, it is much better to have it done over two procedures of 2800 grafts then 2200 grafts, more or less. Second, if in fact you are younger than 50 years old, I would strongly recommend that you have only FUE. Finally, if your total donor supply is typical- 6000 to 7000 grafts- using 5000 of them in the crown will only leave 2000 or so grafts for future hair loss.

Answer: Having second thoughts You didn’t mention your age (which is important ). It appears from the photos that your pattern is very defined (which is a good thing). I think with “5000” grafts you would get excellent coverage but I question that number (it seems very high) . Of paramount importance would be efforts at maintaining your existing hair and preventing further loss to maximize your overall result. This can be accomplished with Finasteride ,Minoxidil ,Low Level Light Therapy and/or Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP).

Answer: 5000 Graft in Vertex 5000 grafts into a vertex of that size should leave plenty of grafts to integrate into the native hair fringe to help with the possibility of more hair loss. On the morning of the procedure, we sit down with the patient to draw out the grafted area, and during this planning session, you should make sure the physician understands your concerns about future hair loss.

Answer: Crown Hair Transplant Hello and thank you for your great question. I’m interested to know how old you are as this could make a difference in your decision. Having 5000 grafts if all at once is not good. I would suggest doing that in 2 separate sessions. Also keep in mind that 5000 grafts is a lot and could deplete your donor area or not leave much for future procedures is needed. I know a lot to think about. You might want to get an in person second opinion before you commit to anything. I wish you luck.Thank you, Dr. T
