I am having a breast lift done via the areola with implants . I had a breast augmentation done ten years ago with gummy bear implants and now need a breast lift with minimal scaring . I have been told that my surgeon will be using mentor implants but I have now heard that Allergan is better ? I don’t want to remove these implants or replace them if all goes well so which is the better brand/implant ?
Answer: Breast Lift with Implants Hi Jess,See the answer prior to mine. You already have very cohesive implants, i.e. gummy bear, so no big reason to change. Now Mentor has just as many choices. All in all, if you are happy, I would not pop for a new pair. Maybe your PS wouldn't even have to enter the pocket, keeping risks down. There are a million statistics and they are massaged by each company to make themselves appear better at a certain point in time. I would not say, as was just stated previously, one is better. I do over 300 BA each year, and have for over a decade, and I use exclusively Mentor. See my video below.Good luck in your surgery. Remember, "Less is more."Dr. Joe

Answer: Comparing implants In terms of quality it is dubious to say one implant brand is better than another, since they all meet stringent FDA requirements. An advantage to Allergan's line is that they have different cohesivity options (responsive, Soft Touch, and cohesive) and 5 profiles to choose from in round.

Answer: Comparing implants Dear Jess, Many thanks for your question. The question I have for you is if you are not having any problems or issues with your current implants, then why are they being changed? Just because an implant is 10 years old is not an indication to change them. The more often you change/interfere with implants then the more likely and sooner you will ruin to problems with them. Regarding what implants are better, Mentor or Allergan, there is no correct answer to this. Both are long established implants with similar safety records and FDA and CE approval. I personally have used both implants from differing ranges within their respective catalogue of implants. That said, I personally have stopped using Allergan implants due to the double capsule formation that has been noted by many surgeons including myself, and also the fact that my interpretation of the reported incidence of BIA-ALCL (a very rare form of cancer associated with breast implants) in the currently published medical literature shows Allergan implants to be one of the highest, albeit very small numbers. The truth is that we do not know the true incidence of this and I have no doubt that these numbers will change in the coming months/years as more becomes known. I heard a rumour that Allergan implants have been withdrawn from France but you would need to research this yourself. I wish you the best of luck with your surgery - please make sure you go to a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon that can advise and treat you responsibly and to high standards. BW, Marcus
