How can I relieve itchy incisions

Question

I am 10 days post op.. have had steri strips on for 6 days (I was told I can take them off after a week) my incisions are extremely itchy! I probably shouldn't do this but I have been lightly scratching around them. I tried putting ice packs on incisions but that doesn't seem to help. Any tips on relieving this itch? Will it be better when I take off the steri strips?

Hello,Thank you for your question. I recommend that you ask your Plastic Surgeon to assess you. You may have a sensitivity to the adhesive on the steri strips. Topical medication to treat itching can be helpful.All the best

It's hard to tell what is going on without an exam, but it is not uncommon for patients to develop an allergy to the adhesive in steri-strips.  This may be happening with you.  I suggest you contact your Plastic Surgeon as soon as you can.  He/she may recommend removing the steri-strips and adhesive from the area, and you may need a topical steroid to settle things down.  The last thing you should do is scratch!  Call today.  Best of luck.

I would call your doctor if you have not already to inform him of the situation. You could be having a reaction to the steri strips or it could just be a natural part of the healing process.  Benadryl is helpful with itching but always ask your surgeon his opinion first. Best wishes!

If your incisions under the steri strips are well healed, they can likely come off.  Once the itchiness is improved, you can put new steri-strips back on or use paper tape (but again, only if the incisions are well healed).  If you decide to keep the steri-strips, you can use some cooled vaseline (put a tub in the fridge) and apply a very small amount around the strips (instead of scratching around them.)
