What is procedure for pre cataract surgery? I’ve worn hard contacts for 50 yrs, never been corrected with glasses. Now told that I will need to be contact free for 3 weeks. OD gave me -12.00 soft contacts to try. Wonder if I could just do one eye at a time maybe couple months or so apart. Then I could at least wear 1 contact. Also, besides myopia, have astigmatism, keratoconus, dry eye syndrome. Any thoughts, suggestions or experience with these symptoms. Pretty concerned for my future vision!

Cataract surgery not only clears up the cloudy vision but also offers the best chance to minimize glasses prescription at the same time. Mother nature usually doesn't make one eye very different from the other. That's our check that our measurements are accurate. If you don't get out of both the contacts then measuring one eye against the other is impossible.Wearing the hard contact changes the shape of the eye. But that shape changes when the contact is removed. It takes weeks to get the cornea to go back to the final shape. We don't want to operate on data based on a measurement that will change after a few weeks.Think of the contact as wearing a size 8 shoe when your really have a 9 1/2 foot. If you cram your foot in it for a few hours, then it may take a while to go back to its native shape and size.Dry eye is the enemy of great results. If preservative free thera-tears or Nano-tears 4 times a day doesn't normalize the surface, then unfrozen autologous serum drops are wonderful about quickly normalizing things. We use them all the time before surgery.Finally, keratoconus varies in severity. What to expect afterwards really depends on the severity of your disease.
