Why is my nose so dry after rhinoplasty? What can I do?

Hello doctors, I am 6 months post op rhinoplasty. I have a few questions on things I’m noticing in my recovery. I have noticed my nose is extremely dry. It is very uncomfortable. Is this normal 6 months after? Will this resolve? What can I do to help? I am using AYR saline spray. Also I also do not feel air coming in and out of my nose. My turbinates were not touched during surgery. Is this normal? Not sure if it has anything to do with ho dry my nose is. I appreciate your time. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing your questions. This is a very common concern for patients recovering from rhinoplasty surgery. Dryness often leads to nasal congestion, stuffiness, crusting, and sometimes nasal airflow obstruction. This is not uncommon after rhinoplasty surgery. Though, this usually resolves after the first 1-2 months. I've had some patients in the past complain about some of the nasal gels worsening nasal dryness. You might try a saline rinse. These rinses can be purchased over the counter- located near the nasal hydrating gels.  Even though you have not had turbinate surgery, there are some other postop issues that could arise, such as internal nasal scarring, septal perforation or nasal valve collapse that could be causing your symptoms. I'd recommend you continue to follow up with your surgeon for a thorough internal and external nasal examination.

Thank you for your question. Nasal airflow may change after nose surgery, especially if one goal of the surgery was to improve nasal obstruction. We recommend you seek close follow-up with your surgeon who can perform a repeat examination then discuss with you the best treatment options to address your concerns. If you have sinus issues as well, sometimes sinus rinses may help. Other measures to help improve moisturization in the nose especially during the winter time include Ayr saline gel (thicker and sits in the nose longer than the spray), Vaseline to the nostrils, and a humidifier at home.

If you had some septal work done in order to fix a deviated septum, that can significantly open up your airway and lead to increased airflow compared to before.  This leads to irritation and dryness.  It can take several months for your mucosa to adapt and that feeling to go away.  Of course, discuss with your PS...
