Is microneedling with PRP really that much better than microneedling without PRP?

Question

Hello, I’ve heard mixed things about this—some people have told me that microneedling with a synthetic growth factor serum or hyaluronic acid is just as effective as microneedling with PRP. There is certainly a big difference in price. Opinions on this? Thanks!

Hello Maria, Microneedling creates micro-channels in the skin for optimum collagen stimulation and growth. Using the patient's own PRP yields faster healing time and excellent results. There is a study in the Journal of Dermatology comparing results with PRP and without. The study found that PRP after microneedling, CO2 or other laser treatments delivers better results.

There is a pretty good amount of research out there showing a noticeable benefit of adding PRP to a microneedling procedure compared to just microneedling alone.  While it can be pricey, if you are looking to get the absolute best results possible, I would consider going with the addition of PRP.

Morpheus 8 is a non-invasive skin and soft tissue tightening treatment that is consistently amazing in our patients. We use the Morpheus to exact fractional induced RF into the skin or tissue in order to tighten collagen and stimulate contraction of the tissue. For acne scars, it is quite useful to build collagen in patients who have atrophic scars but is not very productive for ice-pick scars which require TCA Cross. For tissue tightening, Morpheus is ideal for the face and neck and we often combine it with CO2 laser or Ultherapy to further enhance results. Chemical peels and skin resurfacing should be done at least 5 to 7 days after, but can be performed earlier, depending on treatment severity. Avoid exfoliating skin treatments before Morpheus and expect a period of 2-4 weeks for skin contraction to set in.

There is a great study that was published a year ago in the Journal of Dermatology comparing results with PRP and without. The  study found that PRP delivers better results.

There have been several studies done and we have performed our own on our patients. Hands down our patients have seen best results using PRP during their microneedling. The healing properties that come from the patients own platelets and the quick healing response without taking the risk of a skin response to other products is 2-3 days, where without PRP can be 5-7 days.Best to you,

In our experience we've seen great results with microneedling using great growth factors like TNS Recovery and the DefenAge serum.  I suggest that you look at before and after pictures and judge for yourself if PRP is a real added benefit.  We've not seen the data to show that PRP is an added benefit to long term improvement with microneedling.  All the best from Boston, Dr. Onir

No good formal studies. What is a step up is microneedling with RF- that has proven benefits. Adding PRP can help with the healing times. Many split face studies have been done. The question still remains, apart from speeding up acute healing by up to 48-72 hours, what are the long term benefits of PRP? In theory they provide growth factors and cytokines to help remodel collagen, but the in vivo large studies split face, blinded studies are lacking. I personally tell patients that I use PRP to help heal up the treatment and keep downtime to a minimum. As mentioned the biggest difference is not microneedling PRP but microneeedling with controlled heating- namely RF.
