How long should a penrose drain be used for a seroma?

Question

I had a tummy tuck 4 weeks ago. After 11 days my drains were removed. I then developed a wave like feeling in my stomach. My dr aspirated 2 times then decided to insert a penrose drain. He said I should have it about 5 days and then the draining should stop. It's been 7, Im still draining and he is out of town. How long is it safe to leave the drain in? I also feel and hear lots of movement and gurgling in my stomachs. Is this ok?

Thanks for your inquiry, honestly without an exam it is impossible to advise,  drains that are working can be useful.  I suggest you call your surgeon's office to discuss if the staff needs to evaluate you and proceed from there.

As noted, you would be best served with follow-up with your surgeon, his/her office, or covering surgeon if out of town.  Observe the drainage site where the Penrose drain exits for signs of infection and contact someone if this shows much redness, inflammation, or cloudy/creamy discharge.
