Sliding genioplasty for vertical augmentation - is the bone is still able to grow back together?

JamesSim
In vertical augmentation sliding genioplasty, since there's a space, the bones aren't touching, the bone is still able to grow back together? My Dr. said for vertical augmentation a bone graft is needed or it won't grow back together. I heard that's not true, and that it still is able to grow back together.
