Sharp nipple pain 8 months after surgery - What could this be?

Question

I received a breast augmentation about 8 months ago and did have a complication. I developed a hematoma in my right breast a couple days after surgery and the implantwas immediately replaced. My healing has been pretty normal ever since with the expected soreness, but also a little more tingling and numbness around the nipple. That seemed to fade away, but now I will suddenly get bursts of shooting, sharp pain in both nipples. Is that normal? What could that be?

I understand your concern. However, without a proper assessment, it would be difficult to determine what went wrong. It is best that you visit your plastic surgeon for further assessment or ask for a second opinion. Only after a thorough examination, you can get proper recommendations and advice.

Nipple pain you describe is likely from stretching if the nerve to the nipple where it exits between the ribs. It typically subsides on its own. I recommend my patients take ibuprofen. There is nothing to do surgically

I would certainly discuss this with your plastic surgeon. In general it is normal even this far out from surgery to have some nerve pain, which is what you may describing. The only thing I would want to rule out would be capsular contracture, but as long as your breast implants are soft and move, that should not be the issue.

The shooting pain is normal and related to your nerves growing back. they should slowly subside as you heal.

This pain could have several different causes.  If it does not resolve on its own over the coming weeks, becomes worse, or new symptoms develop see your surgeon for an evaluation.  It may be regeneration of nerve endings, but this should improve over time.

It sounds like you have pretty normal nerve pain that may occur with any surgical procedure.  they usually resolve with time.  If it is very bothersome or prolonged, then you may consider trying Lyrica or Neurontin which are used for neuralgia pain (nerve pain).

Thank you so much for your question! This could be caused by several factors, such as nerve sensitivity, implant position, capsular contracture, infection and implant rupture. It is important to do breast ultrasound and consult with plastic surgeon based on its result. Hope it helped!
