Abnormal fat on my back, under arms and side of my breasts. Sudden weight gain. Can I remove with lipo?

Thank you for your question.   If you have indeed experienced abnormal sudden weight gain, you should see your primary care doctor and have some labs drawn.   16lbs in one year is a significant amount to gain.   The best liposuction candidates are at their idea body weight and a stable weight.   Liposuction will help with contour but is not a weight loss tool.   See your PCP and make sure there is nothing going on from a medical standpoint and then find a board certified plastic surgeon in your area.   The areas you are referencing are popular areas for liposuction.   Good luck.

Thanks for the question and I understand your concerns. First of all, I would advise you to go see your primary care doctor first and inquire about your hormone status. A severe imbalance in testosterone, thyroid, and Growth Hormone may significantly affect the deposition of your recent fat. Secondly, are you optimizing your diet and exercise program? Lastly, liposuction can definitely help shape and remove the fat. Often in our practice, we see our patients lose more weight after their procedures! Each area in question would have to be evaluated to determine the potential benefits of liposuction. Older patients do not have the elasticity in the skin to accommodate the reduction in volume created by liposuction which can create a secondary aesthetic issue. Liposuction will also not remove 16 pounds of fat.

Back fat is relatively easy to remove by liposuction.  This same fat often wraps around the lateral chest wall under the arms and onto the lateral breasts.  Its most unique quality is fat on the back of human beings is segmented by membranes and hang down on the back in what is often referred to as dulaps.  When fatty dulaps are present on the back, to get rid of them entirely, the cosmetic plastic surgeon not only sucks out the fat directly, but also angles the canula in such a way to fenestrate (make windows) the membranes so that the entire dulap disappears.Fat that has wrapped around to the lateral breast is best suctioned from below the breast up towards the lateral ribs.  If you were my patient, I would liposuction from incisions made in the midline of the back.  Therefore one incision can get the upper back (fat hanging over the bra), one incision for the midback (under bra fat), and one incision for the lumbar roll (known as hips or muffin tops).  Fortunately, Las Vegas has some of the best plastic surgeons in the world.  I would recommend consulting with at least three Board Certified plastic surgeons and ask to see before and after pictures of liposuction of back fat.

My best advice is to see a board certified plastic surgeon for a consultation. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure and only improves one's contour once you are within an ideal weight for your height.

The real question here is what is the cause of the sudden weight gain and has it leveled off or are you continuing to gain weight? This could be a medical problem and you certainly do not want to have a procedure to contour your body and then you foil the results with weight gain. Weight loss first may be the answer followed by liposuction or another contouring procedure to get the best result. Seek a consultation from a board certified plastic surgeon to help answer this question.

Sometimes there are medical explanations (such as thyroid issues) that may explain your weight gain.
