Can I fly with a hernia ?

If you have a hernia (it sounds like your GP thinks you have an inguinal hernia) then being on a plane for a few hours should be safe. But if you are getting pain in the hernia it could be a sign that it may become strangulated sooner rather than later. That is usually a surgical emergency and so I recommend you have this fixed before travelling abroad for a holiday.

The main risk (also one for passengers without surgery) will be the possibility of developing a clot in one of your deep leg veins, DVT, that could travel to your lungs (Pulmonary Embolism). Venous blood clot risk factors include sitting for prolonged times (for example prolonged plane flights or road trips) obesity, oral contraceptive use, sedentary lifestyle, familial clotting disorders. to minimize this from happening to you, I would keep hydrated, wear TED stockings, walk around often and frequently, keep your legs elevated if possible and mover your legs, ankles and feet often while sitting.You should discuss your concerns with your surgeon to see what is best for you. #flyingpostop#tummytuck#TT

Thank you for your question.If your hernia is easily reducible and has never got "Stuck" and has never been painful, it is usually okay to fly.You should still, however, get an opinion from your primary care. If however, it has ever been symptomatic or has been stuck, I would recommend having it fixed prior to any travel.  All The Best !

No body can predict if and when of any medical condition.  Hernia can incarcerate while you are vacationing and present a life threatening emergency.  You will be taking risk of such an event during your vacation. 

There is no reason why you can't fly. It should have no
affect on your hernia at all form the information you have provided.

I would suggest that you have your primary care doctor assess you again; careful physical examination will needed to determine whether a hernia is "reducible" or incarcerated". If the latter, more urgent surgical intervention may be necessary; probably better to do so prior to traveling.  Best wishes.

Hi, szilvi17.  Flying itself will not exacerbate your hernia.  However, if you do have pain from hernia, you may have incarcerated hernia which can progress to strangulated hernia.  Please avoid lifting, coughing, straining, other other activities that would increase your intra-abdominal pressure.  If you do get strangulated hernia, it will need urgent attention.  Please see a general surgeon soon.  Best regards.

Hello, Thanks for your question, once an inguinal hernia have been diagnosed the possibility of incarceration and strangulation is always present, the diagnosed hernia should be treated as soon as possible by a general surgeon to avoid possible complications.Regards
