IPL stimulated my growth and made some of the hair very coarse. I have been told that the Nd Yag laser is best for my skin type and hair but I'm worried it will have the same effect as IPL. How likely is this to happen?

Answer: Paradoxical hair growth from laser Growth from a hair removal laser is related to a few factors. If the laser is not used to a high enough power level, the laser is more likely to cause this. This is often the case where the technician is afraid of burning the patient so they feel it's safer to use a lower power. It also is more likely to occur in mediterranean skin types. Lastly, hair on the face, arms, and legs which is thin is more likely to have this problem. Darker skin types need a 1064 laser for proper treatment. IPL is not very good at hair removal and I would not recommend this type of hair removal, especially for darker skin types. I don't often treat facial hair anymore, especially darker skin with fine hair.

Answer: Does the Nd Yag laser stimulate hair growth? Hello, thank you for your question. The NdYag (1064nm wavelength) is most successful on darker skin types, depending on your skin type the Alex (755nm wavelength) can also be successful. Both of the laser wavelength will be more effective in the removal of hair follicles than any IPL (Intense Pulsed LIGHT) device. There is a big difference between a laser and a light device. The laser, either wavelength can be very successful in laser hair reduction, and does not stimulate hair growth.Good Luck!
