I'm in the process of getting laser hair removal (just had my first session last week). I'm having my bikini, underarms, and upper lip done. Since it's almost summer, I want to be able to lay out at the pool (not use a tanning bed.) I put 35 spf sunscreen on my face, but I usually only use an 8 spf on my arms, legs, and chest. Is this sufficient to prevent any burns or discoloration from the laser treatment? How long before and after treatment should I avoid the sun?
Answer: Laser Hair Removal with the Sun Tanning after laser hair removal is typically not suggested. Assuming you want the best possible results, I would recommend waiting for laser hair removal until winter when your skin is the lightest it can be. A laser hair removal treatment usually works best on a lighter skin tone. Use plenty of sunscreen while outside to prevent burning and skin damage.

Answer: Tanning during laser hair removal I advise my patients who are getting laser treatments that they should not get a tan. They can certainly be in the sun, but need to protect that areas that we are treating with a good sunscreen that they frequently reapply. If they come to their treatment sessions with a tan, we have to turn the settings on the laser down in order not to burn their skin and this results in less effective treatments.

Answer: Laser Hair Removal Thank you for your question! One of the main contradictions to the Laser Hair Removal treatment is the skin tone; the darker the skin tone the higher the risks of complications with the laser. For the best treatment outcome, make sure to apply sunscreen on the area every couple hours when exposed to the sun. Your laser technician may not perform your treatment if your skin has darkened due to being exposed to the sun for prolonged periods of time, and may reschedule you for couple weeks out once the tan fades away. Therefore, for the best outcome of the treatment, do not tan by the pool if you are planning to finish your treatments within a certain period of time.
