I know ideally i shouldnt drink wine for 2 weeks to avoid bruising wand bleeding, especially since Im on medication too. But will it kill my fat cells since I only did the surgery 3 days ago??
Answer: Smoking and drinking after surgery--did you think you'd get reassurance it's still OK? Come on, Sue! You know it's bad, and you did it anyway. If you eat "just a little" rat poison will it kill you?Nicotine is a potent vasoconstrictor, meaning it chokes off the capillaries that are essential to keeping your fat cells alive as they heal and develop their own blood supply, Since about half of the grafted fat cells die under the BEST of circumstances, smoking even one "super light" cigarette is like asking if it's OK for your boyfriend or husband to beat you up "just a little bit."But I realize I'm doing that verbally here (and if you were my patient I'd do the same in person and ask you why you spent your money if you didn't want to follow instructions?), so I'll just say you definitely did not do any good, but the harm is indeterminate. Too many fat grafting breast enlargement patients (who didn't smoke, drink and DID follow the rules) have described here on Realself how their breast fat grafts have "melted away" over time, and nicotine in any form, as well as bleeding in any amount, are not things you want to be doing if you really want this to work. Sort of like taking "just one little" aspirin, and hoping the bruising isn't going to be visible. The "rules and recommendations" are not given to protect the doctor from lawsuits; they are given to help patients get the best results. They are NOT optional, nor are they negotiable. Please follow your surgeon's advice--I'm upset enough for both of us that you don't seem to care enough to do what's right for YOUR results to be the best possible (and I'm not even a fan of breast enlargement via fat grafting.) Good luck. Dr. Tholen

Answer: What will happen now that I had red wine and one super light cigarette only 3 days after my Fat Graft to the breasts? Red wine will increase your risk of bruising after surgery. You should try to minimize red wine consumption for one week after surgery. As far as killing fat cells, this will Iikely not be the case, unless you develop significant bleeding or a hematoma that can certainly kill the fat cells. Therefore I recommend not to drink red wine, or take Ibuprofen such as motrin, Alleve etc. As far as the super light cigarette is concerned, nicotine can theoretically decrease blood flow to the area of the fat grafts. In order to increase your chances of having the best graft take, and ultimately improved result, nicotine should be avoided for 4-6 weeks after surgery. It is difficult to say with exact certainty if the cigarette you had will have an affect, but certainly continued smoking will, for the reasons I just described. Good luck. Hope this helps!

Answer: Alcohol and cigarettes after fat transfer Your honesty is appreciated. Visit your surgeon to assess you and abstain! Smoking is a vasoconstrictor and will suffocate your tissues from nutrition (not to mention numerous other detrimental effects). Alcohol can thin your blood and can potentially cause bleeding or exacerbate bruising. Best of luck! Michael Omidi, MD

Answer: Alcohol and nicotine after breast fat transfer Alcohol in very moderate amounts is less likely to affect your post-operative results than nicotine is. I would not recommend drinking any alcohol if you are still on any narcotic pain medications, however I would recommend avoiding ALL forms of nicotine - gum, patches, cigarettes, e-cigs, cigars, etc - as the nicotine acts to close off your small blood vessels, which are essential to helping you heal and bring blood to the new fat cells that are trying to establish themselves in your breasts. I always tell my patients if they have spent their hard earned money on surgery, they should do EVERYTHING in their ability to get the best result, even if it means giving up some recreational activities for a short time. In the long term it is worth it to be well behaved for 4 weeks.
