I am 19 days post op and I am wondering when I can start using my biocorneum scar creme? My plastic surgeon still has me changing the tape every 2 days with no scar creme? He starts the scar creme at 4 weeks. Is that normal?
Answer: Biocorneum after lift/implants Thank you for your question. The answer will vary depending on whom you ask. In my practice, I will start around 1-2 weeks after surgery as long as there are no areas of delayed healing. Week 4 is not unreasonable. Good luck.

Answer: When to use silicone scar treatments Thanks for your questions. I typically have my patients use a silicone scar tape (Mepitac, Embrace) beginning as soon as all the crusting/scabbing is mostly gone (usually between 2-3 weeks post-op). In my opinion, silicone tape/sheeting products provide much more optimal coverage/contact than a gel ever could. I do really like silicone gels (BioCorneum, Kelo-Cote, etc) for facial scars where they are much less noticeable than a piece of tape or sheeting. Your plastic surgeon may have a very sensible reason for not recommending silicone scar treatment for your particular case until 4 weeks. I would encourage you to discuss with your surgeon. Best wishes!Dr. Brown

Answer: Scar creams and timing Thanks for your question. There is no absolute answer. Some physicians will start earlier and some later. While the wounds are often sealed to the outside world in 48 hours I personally like to be sure the scars have good strength before they are massaged. In my own practice I start "lotions and potions" at three week, but 4 is reasonable. Most patients don't realize that it is their genetics that plays a key role in how the scar will heal and is often more important than their PS or the scar cream they choose. There is great medical evidence that physical massage of the scars help flatten and soften sooner. I am more a fan of lubricants to assist massage rather than the expensive scar creams. You PS sounds like he has a specific plan. If you have questions about it I suspect he would be happy to share his thinking.Best wishes.

Answer: Scar cream Thanks so much for reaching out. Are usually start scar cream once the bones are fully healed. This is usually at around 2 to 3 weeks after surgery. However waiting to four weeks doesn't seem like a problem to me. I hope this helps :-)
