Why wouldn't I have a pre-op appointment?

Question

Mommy makeover surgery date is set but I do not have a pre-op. In my FB surgery group, everyone is talking about their blood work and EKG's coming back good... I do not have anything set up. I see my doctor an hour before my surgery is scheduled. That's not enough time for an EKG and blood work is it?

Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  Each facility determines the needed preoperative testing based on a patients medical history and any possible areas of concern. This can include a chest X-ray, EKG, and blood work.  Ultimately without knowing your age and comorbidities it is difficult to offer definite advice and I would broach the topic with your surgeon or anesthesiologist.  Hope this helps.

Pre-op appointments vary per practice.  It is difficult to comment without knowing your medical history.  I would suggest calling your surgeon and discussing your concerns.  Some practices take photos and discuss the procedures, answer questions and order blood work if needed at the pre-op visit.

lindystar.     Something is not right.  All labs and medical clearance should be done weeks or at least days before the operation.  Check with your surgeon.  Be sure to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon.  Good luck!

Most PS require a pre-op  discussion  but not necessarily  blood work, chest x-ray or EKG. As has been previously stated, if the patient is healthy, on NO medications  and below a certain age ( as dictated by the facility or anesthesiologist) such lab studies have been shown not to be  indicated. If you  have any unanswered  questions prior to your surgery, it's  very important that they be answered.

I like all my patients over the age of 50 to have an EKG prior to receiving general anesthesia.  I also request that my female patients have their hemoglobin/hematocrit level checked a couple of weeks prior to surgery to make sure that they are not anemic. Every doctor has their own standard practices of care and so I cannot speak for your PS.  If you have any medical issues, then these need to be addressed with your surgeon who can order tests to be done by your regular physician.

Not all patients need to undergo preoperative testing.  All female patients of child bearing age will undergo a pregnancy test before surgery.  All other testing is determined by the surgeon.  You do want to be sure that you have all of your concerns addressed before surgery.  I encourage you to contact your surgeon before surgery to discuss any questions you have.

Thank you for your question.The need for preoperative blood testing prior to surgery depends on the age and the health of the patient as well as the procedure being performed.Blood work on younger patients without any health problems has not been definitively found to increase the safety of surgery and may be unnecessary in many cases.Still, many patients who are undergoing a mommy makeover are of the age where a blood count is often obtained prior to surgery.A pregnancy test should be performed in all patients of childbearing age who haven't undergone a sterilization procedure. This could be done on the morning of surgery.Just to make sure you surgery goes smoothly, I would contact your surgeon to make sure that no preoperative testing is desired.Best wishes for a successful surgery and a smooth recovery

While blood work isn’t always necessary, depending on your age and medical history, it is unusual not to have a pre-op appointment in case you have last-minute questions or concerns. However, every plastic surgeon’s office is going to run a little differently, so if you have concerns about not having enough time with your plastic surgeon the morning of your mommy makeover, I would contact his or her office earlier and see if you can go ahead and schedule an extra appointment. This is a question for your surgeon.  Personally, I always require pre op appointments prior to surgery.  This allows for last minute questions as well as taking pre op photos.
