As you heal from rhinoplasty the inflammation in your nose causes the nasal passages to swell and also can trigger more mucus production. With the addition of splints, your normal nasal drainage pathways can be obstructed. Since the ears drain in the back of the nose, you can have changes with your ears. That begin said, it's important to contact your surgeon and notify him/her of your concerns. A quick office visit can ensure that there isn't another reason for post surgical nasal pain, and you can get your nose cleaned in the office so you don't have to manipulate it yourself. Things will often improve significantly once the splints are removed. You may need some nasal sprays during your post op recovery, but this should only be started under the instruction of your surgeon. Hope you feel better soon.
