I just had three small ventral hernias repaired 11 days ago. The incision is inside my belly button. The following day I did have some fluid above the belly button that was really squishy and the dr drained. At my 1 week post op he drained another 8cc (approx). There is still swelling above my belly button but now it's more spongy than squishy. No pain really. I'm worried it's another hernia or could it just be swelling?
Answer: Need time for swelling to improve Thank you for your question and photos. It is likely swelling. You should consult again with your surgeon to make sure everything looks ok. It is normal to have swelling up to 3 months after such a surgery. Best of luck and congrats on your surgery!!- Dr. Bryson Richards

Answer: 11 days post hernia repair... Is this swelling or another hernia? Thank you for your photographs and questions, and I am sorry to hear you are worried about your repair. I can see the area you are concerned about, and without any reason to expect your hernia repair was compromised, this is most likely swelling from surgery and/or a small fluid collection. The only truly accurate way to diagnose this would be an in-person examination by your physician. Make an appointment to see them so that you can voice your concerns.

Answer: 11 days post hernia repair... Is this swelling or another hernia? I am sorry to hear about the problem you are experiencing. Online consultants will not be helpful when it comes to differentiating swelling, from seroma, from recurrence of hernia. Probability speaking, given your history of fluid accumulation, it is most likely that you are dealing with swelling or seroma. Follow up with your plastic surgeon for accurate assessment, advice, and treatment. Best wishes.

Answer: Is this swelling after my #herniarepair #plasticsurgery ? Thank you for sharing your photos and concerns about your hernia repair. Without the benefit of an in person exam it's impossible to give an accurate medical diagnosis, however it appears you may just be experiencing normal post operative swelling. I agree completely with Dr. Castillo and best to follow up in person with your operative plastic surgeon. Very best to you. -Brian S. Coan, MD, FACS
