RF microneedle. Why do doctors prefer insulated over non insulated?

Question

If the rf microneedle machines are color blind then why do docs prefer insulated over non insulated? Color blind means that it will not cause any pigmentation. Thanks

Non-insulated creates heat along the entire length of the needle and gives better results. I always combine microneedling with prp and lasers to get the best outcomes. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Insulated needles allow targeting of the deeper dermis for tightening benefits.  For more superficial complaints such as fine lines and shallow acne scars, non-insulated needles would be more beneficial.  Although RF energy is safer in patients of color compared to lasers, any significant heat can result in increased risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.  Consult with a board-certified and experienced cosmetic physician.

The RF (Radiofrequency) Microneedling devices may offer the option of use of non-insulated needles vs insulated needles. With the Vivace RF Microneedling device, the insulated needles only deliver energy along the bottom .4 mm of the needle, protecting the epidermis. This allows the procedure to be performed on darker skin which is at a higher risk for hyperpigmentation.  The non-insulated needles deliver RF along the full length of the needles. They are used for lighter skin types.

I use a non-insulated machine and love the results.  The insulated refers to the needle tips.  A non-insulated generates heat along the entire needle.  An insulated machine has the base of the needle covered, with only the tip exposed.  This allows all the energy to be sent to the tip only.  The goal is to create micro-channels and to stimulate the dermal layer to make collagen.  There are concerns of skin burns with a non-insulated machine, but this probably results from too much energy as opposed to the insulation.Good luck to you,Dr. Powell
