I went for a consultation with a plastic surgeon for a breast lift. I am very prone to developing keloid scars. My surgeon wants to do radiation treatment right after the procedure to help prevent these scars. I have not heard of this and wondering if this is a common treatment to prevent keloids.

Radiation is a technique to reduce keloid scars. However, most surgeons would be very reluctant to to radiate the breast tissue. You seem to be concerned with keloid scarring and will need a better surgical technique to minimize scarring. You have not provided photographs but the technique I recommend is The Bellesoma Method. This will reshape your breast tissue creating upper pole fullness without implants, elevate them higher on the chest wall and more medial to increase your cleavage. Vertical scars are avoided, nipple sensation (in 95%) and the ability to breast feed are maintained.

Immediate radiation on the fresh scar has shown to decrease the risk of keloids, especially in those that make large keloids. Typically, the radiations treatments will be from 3-5 days, depending upon the radiation oncologist. Yes, it is done.

Low dose radiation (with very little penetrating power), known as Grenz ray therapy, is often utilized to treat keloids refractory to other forms of treatment. . A mild sunburn like reaction may be noted after treatment and a tan like coloration of the skin may persist for several months. Complications are rare.
