this is basically a continuation of my previous question. ( and i will try and be precise as possible) I was looking through the ASPS website for board certified doctors to expand my selection of doctors to chose from for procedures I would like to have done, the site gives you the option of selecting another country to search for certified drs whom are members of ASPS, which i did and came upon 2 drs from the Dominican Republic listed. How is that possible?
Answer: Is it possible for a plastic surgeon in the Dominican Republic to be a board certified member with ASPS? Some doctors are international members of ASPS. I would check the ABPS to see if the individuals are board certified. Whenever you are looking for board certified plastic surgeons always look at ABPS instead of ASPS. ASPS collects fees to become a member for the organization, and being a board certified plastic surgeon is not the same as being a member of ASPS.Try to research this to find the surgeon who consistently produces the results you would expect. Look at reviews on this site and see who gets the surgery right every time. Find a board certified plastic surgeon who performs hundreds of tummy tucks, liposuction procedures, Brazilian buttlifts and breast lifts each year. Then look at the plastic surgeon's website before and after photo galleries to get a sense of who can deliver the results. Kenneth Hughes, MDLos Angeles, CA

Answer: Board certification I can see how all of this can be confusing.Let's start with the basics:-the American Board of Medical Specialities (ABMS)is the governing organization for the 24 legitimate Medical Boards. It is the Gold Standard. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is one out of 24 such recognized and accreditted Boards-ABMS requires that to be Board Certified in Plastic Surgery that: Graduated from a accreditted medical school Graduated from a accreditted residency training program (at least 5 years of specialized surgical training after medical school) Passed a written exam: qualifying exam Passed a 2 day oral exam: certifying exam Only with having completed ALL of the above can you become a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and a Diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery.- there are several " self designated" boards that are not recognized by the ABMS and do not have the same rigorous criteria that use similar names. One such board allows family practice, OB-GYN, ER, Anth., etc and non surgically trained physicians to be come "board certified". These boards are not recognized as being equivalent in most states and hospitals.- there are several medical Socities like the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) that require ABMS Board Certification to become a member. ASPS does NOT give out Board Certifications only MEMBERSHIPS. ASPS will also include several other categories of membership ie, international members( Plastic Surgeons that have not graduated or trained in the USA) that do not have to be ABMS certified but have qualified to become members because they have met the international requirements to be MEMBERS of ASPS.-please go to the ABMS (Board Certification requirements)and ASPS (Membership requirements)web sites for more information.

Answer: Just one question Regardless of whether or not they are board certified or members of the appropriate societies are you prepared to have surgery outside the country? What if you have a complication when you return. Your insurance won't cover it and probably Any plastic surgeon you see will ask for 5 times what you might have paid in the first place having the surgery done in your area. The choice is yours but the unanticipated complications may cost you a lot more than anticipated, unless you can fly back to the DR frequently. Think it over very carefully, Dr Schuster in Boca Raton

Answer: Board certification This is a very easy question to answer for yourself. Go to the website for the American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive surgery and there is a section where you can enter the name of your surgeon. They will tell yo instantly if he has passed the stringent certification requirements.....and remember, membership does not necessarily mean certification. Make sure you have the latter.I urge you to stay in the United States to have your treatment. I recently took care of a woman who went to the Dominican Republic for a tummy tuck and came back to the states with a necrotizing soft tissue infection. She spent three weeks in the ICU and her procedure ended up costing her about 20 times more and now she has a deformed abdomen....please do not be penny wise and pound foolish!! Seek someone local who will help you with the cost, save the money or finance your surgery through care credit. It is not worth risking your life.
