Can post surgical drains come out on their own? (Photo)

Question

I am 11 days post op extended tummy tuck. For the last three days my drain output has been 30cc. From one drain 20-25cc and 5-10cc from the other. The higher output drain stitching has pulled free and the drain tube is pulling out. I see my PS on Monday but I am afraid this drain is going to come out before then.

Hello Hope. Yes, the drain is at risk of pulling out - now that the suture holding it in place is not longer functioning. However, if you're careful it should not fall out - unless it is pulled with significant force. If still concerned call your PS. Best, Dr. ALDO

Hello, it is possible but uncommon for a drain to fall out on its own.  If you notice that the suture is loose, ensure that the drain and bulb is not dangling so there is no downward pulling on the drain

The drains are either flat on the inside or rounded. The flat ones are a little wider and don't come out as easily. The flat one can slip right out. It sounds like they can both come out based on the output. Call your surgeon and see how they want you to handle it.

Thank you for your question. The best thing to do is to call your surgeon and ask them what they want you to do. They might ask you to remove the drain or tape it to your body to secure it. Good luck.
