Recommended to remove a chin implant as a precaution?

I'm a 23 yr old female and I got a chin implant (silicone, 6mm) 5 years ago. I'm not having any issues now, but I'm concerned about possibility of infection in the future, especially as I've been getting a lot of deep chin acne. I was told that there's less chance of sagging the sooner I remove it and when I'm younger the skin has more elasticity. Would it be a good idea to remove the implant now or would it be better to wait and only remove it IF there's an issue?

It doesn't seem that there is a good reason to remove your chin implant if you are satisfied with it. Deep acne and infections related to it will not affect the implant and cause its infection. Only infected, displaced, deformity creating implants should be replaced or removed. A consultation with an experienced board certified plastic surgeon with good reputation in facial implants would help. Good luck.

I would suggest that if your chin implant is in good position and you are happy with the aesthetic effect of the chin implant as to why it was originally placed, then I would recommend leaving it alone. I have used those types of chin implants for 23 years and have never seen one get infected as a result of overlying skin conditions. However, ultimately the choice is yours.

I wouldn't touch it.  The aesthetic consequences from having it removed can be problematic.  I have never (and I'm confident I never will) see a chin implant become infected from acne, no matter the depth or severity.  The position that your implant sits in relation to the overlying skin is where most people's bone sits.  Acne does not cause their bone to become infected.  So, barring a unique issue going on with you and your skin condition, I think you are best served by leaving the implant in place.

Hi, I have performed many facial shaping procedures, including Chin Augmentation with dermal fillers or silastic chin implants, for over 30 years.  I've "never" heard of prophylactically removing a silastic facial implant (chin or cheek).  The risk of infection is very low in a stable implant.

Hi  Thank you for your question.  If you were my patient I would suggest leaving well enough alone.  It is not likely that acne is the result of having a chin implant in.  I have designed and been using implants for 40 years and have never seen this happen.  If you are happy with your results no need to worry about infection that is not present.  As always, the patient is in charge.  Best of luck!
