Raised breast augmentation scars 5 months after surgery (Photo)

Question

So Im worried that the scar to the right looks worse than the one to the left, and Im scared that there’s something wrong. Is it normal to have a raised scar almost 5 months after surgery or is it some kind of hypertrophic scar?

Hello,Yes, you do demonstrate some hypertrophic scarring. I advise silicone sheeting to be applied for 4-6 months post op for many of my patients because it seems to be the most effective for raised, red scars.  You could try and see if this is effective for you. I recommend that you see your plastic surgeon and ask them what they advise. All the best

It does appear that your right breast scar has hypertrophic qualities to it and I would seek out your surgeon for possible steroid injections and silicone sheet/scar cream treatments to improve the thickness and firmness of the scar.  Hope this helps.

You do have raised, hypertrophic scarring of your incision. At 5 months you may improve some more over time, but you may actually worsen as well. At this point, there is nothing wrong with trying some localized steroid injections and silicone tape to help reduce the scar thickness. If that makes things much better than you are done, otherwise, consider scar revision with aggressive post op scar management after you get to 1 year post BBA. Good luck.

Based on the photos you do have a bit of a hypertrophic scar. The normal course of hypertrophic scarring will begin to diminish after about a year however there are various treatments that can improve the appearance and quality of the scar even as it maturing though the first year.  Follow up with your plastic surgeon to get his/her opinion on the best course of action.  This may include various topical treatment or injections.  Hypertrophic scarring is a very treatable problem and is biologically different than keloid scarring which can be more challenging, though the two are often diagnosed interchangeably they are not the same.

Hi,I agree the scar on one side does look thicker/raised compared to the other side. You have a couple of options. I would contact your surgeon to discuss steroid injections or revising the scar at a later time if it still bothers you. These types of scars can be caused by multiple things. If you do decide to have it revised, make sure you protect that scar while healing. No underwire bra's or thick bra bands that fall on your scar. I recommend my patients wear paper tape for 6-8 weeks after surgery. Best wishes!

Thank you for your question and photos.Your scars appears to be slightly hypertrophied at this stage. My personal experience is that many scars that look this way will settle down over time but I usually intervene in some way if they look this way.Options include injections and topical treatment with a silicone based product. My personal preference is to try silicone gel sheeting on the scars to be used at all times except when showering for a couple of months when hypertrophy is noted. If this shows improvement, continue with the sheeting until the scars are soft and flat. If not improving, I do small dilute steroid injections into the scar. This carries some risk of whitening the skin and causing tissue involution (pockets where there is less soft tissue) so I use it sparingly and only if the sheeting does not appear to be working.Your surgeon will likely have his or her own protocol for dealing with this type of scarring. In some cases, just time is all that is necessary for improvement but there is little risk to the silicone treatment and it often helps.I hope this helps. Congratulations on your surgery.
