How can I prevent getting sick before my surgery? I have a BA in 9 days and all my children have gotten sick recently.

I have my surgery for a breast augmentation in 9 days.I have three children and they have all gotten sick in the last few days running low fevers . I have been taking zinc and vitamin C but other then that I don't know what I can do. Not the end of the world but I want to be able to do anything and everything to make sure I have no fever or anything that would delay my surgery date that is set in nine days. Please help !!

Breast augmentation is elective surgery so if you are running a fever, you should notify your plastic surgeon.  He or she would probably recommend that you postpone your surgery until you are healthy or recommend that you consult with your family practice doctor to determine if the cause of your illness is viral or bacterial and if antibiotics should be prescribed.  Some upper respiratory infections could increase the risk of anesthesia complications. Your safety is of utmost importance!Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

Hello and Thank you for your question. I usually recommend my patients to take  vitamin C and lots of fluids. Also you can take some multivitamins. 
Finally speak to your Plastic surgeon and speak about your concerns.

In order to strengthen your immune system, there are several things you could do.  First, get your supplement only from natural health food stores; never from a pharmacy or grocery store (typically sell synthetic junk that does not belong in your body).  I recommend my patients take a good multivitamin along with Vitamin C (ester C is the best for your intestines).  You should take 500-1,000mg of Vit C 3 times per day with meals.  Take 5,000i.u of Vitamin D3 for the next several weeks.  Coconut oil, oil of oregano, and Zinc are also good to take.  Eating healthy and avoiding processed foods and sugar will also go a long way.  Drink only water or green tea (no soft drinks). Finally, consider taking green powder supplements and taking in about 80 grams of good quality protein per day.  Natural health food stores can help you with all of these ideas.

The vitamin supplements are a good idea, but the best thing you can do is meticulous handwashing.  After helping the children, wash your hands and theirs.  Be sure to use antibacterial soap and cleaners for the commonly touched surfaces of your home.

I am sorry to hear other concerns about getting sick before your breast augmentation.  As others have noted Vitamin C and Zinc in handwashing with antibacterial soap can be helpful. The concern is anesthesia.  If you have an upper respiratory illness with coughing, sneezing and stuffy nose it is likely that anesthesia will not allow surgery to proceed.  If you have respiratory symptoms NyQuil and Sudafed can be helpful.
