I had microdermabrasion for the first time by an esthetician. It was very painful during the neck portion of the treatment. I now have bruising, extreme redness, and chin acne (didn’t have any acne going into the appointment). I’m concerned about permanent damage (broken capillaries and/or blood vessels) on my neck and face. Is this normal? How long until I’m healed? What products can I use to heal faster? This was totally unexpected and no warnings were given about this prior to treatment.

Answer: Redness after Microdermabrasion Unless you bruise easily or were on medications or supplements that can thin your blood it does look like your treatment was deeper than the typical microdermabrasion. Dermabrasion goes deeper to create punctate bleeding and is usually performed by a physician using a surgical gown and blood precautions. Yours may have been somewhere in between. You should heal well in time in the lower facial area and the more sensitive neck. Use arnica gel or tablets from your local vitamin store or online to speed the process and avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, fish oils and any other medications that can cause more bleeding. For pain you may take Tylenol (R). Make sure you protect your skin from UV radiation with spf 50 and zinc oxide or titanium dioxide containing sun protection product.

Answer: Microdermabrasion This is usually a very superficial procedure and does not cause a lot of issues but the neck is quite different from the face and may be red for a while but it sounds like you have a bit deeper issue and it will heal without sequelae
