Breast Reduction Combined w/ Reconstruction for Cyst Removal?

I Have Fibroid Cysts in Both Breasts, One Rather Large. I Want Removed. I have a cyst so large in my left breast that I would need reconstructive surgery if I have it removed. Its really painful sometimes and I'm considering having it removed, but I also want my breasts reduced because I've noticed my breasts are more painful since gaining weight in them. can I have a reduction as part of reconstructive surgery?

Breasts cysts are removed with breast reductions on a routine basis. Your cysts are larger than the ordinary breast cysts and so some clarification will be required. Location and size of the cysts will determine the technique which will be needed to accomplish this for you.

It is certainly possible to have a cyst removed and undergo reconstruction/reduction surgery at the same time. It is important that your surgeon know ahead of time that the cyst is just that- a cyst. Seeing a breast surgeon ahead of your planned plastic surgery procedure may be a good idea; in certain situations, a breast surgeon may want to biopsy one or more of the cysts/fibroanidomas ahead of surgery to be sure they are benign.

	When a large cyst is removed, a plastic surgeon can employ reconstructive techniques to help sculpt your breast into a normal shape and avoid deformities that can result from the removal of a large cyst.

Removing a breast cyst while haveing a reduction is certainly possible. It reaally depends upon how large the cyst is, how large the breasts are, and where the cyst is in relationship to the pedicle of breast that keeps the nipple alive.

Yes!  Absolutely you could have a breast reduction combined with removal of the large fibroadenomas in your breasts. Your insurance should cover this procedure and we would seek prior approval from your carrier.  This would be an outpatient procedure, meaning you could go home the same day or stay overnight and leave the following day.  Recovery would be similar to that of a standard breast reduction, which is typically not bad at all because only skin and soft tissue are involved (not muscle or bone, which are more painful).

Yes, you should be able to combine a breast reduction with removal of your cyst(s). Your plastic surgeon may have to modify his or her technique to account for the cysts, but this shouldn't be a problem. Your plastic surgeon will likely want you to see a general surgeon regarding the cysts, and may want to perform the surgery with the general surgeon, to ensure the cysts are removed to the satisfaction of the general surgeon, and to ensure that the cyst removal doesn't compromise the reduction.
