I am a 22 year old student athlete and was just diagnosed with a fibroadenoma. I would like to get it removed this summer. I have been considering getting a breast augmentation as well and was wondering if it is possible to have both done simultaneously. Would anesthesia be the same for both? Would most surgeons be willing to do this? I am living in the Philadelphia area. Any information would be appreciated!! Thanks :)

Answer: Discrete tumors should be removed and can be done with the augmentation. However, depending on location of your tumor, you may have another scar elsewhere. Insurance should cover the 30min or so of OR time/anesthesia in addition to the surgeon fee, then the cosmetic fees kick in once the tumor is removed. I personally don't like watching a obvious mass because you are assuming the needle biopsy is reflective of the entire mass and I know of patients who had such tumors that were labeled benign, eventually transform to malignancies.

Answer: Fibroadenoma and breast augmentation This is certainly a doable procedure and should be covered by insurance. The incision for the fibroadenoma may be different than the incision for the breast augmentation. Be aware that there is probably an increased risk for complications like bleeding, infection and capsular contracture, albeit very small. This wouild be one reason not to do both at the same time.
